For the plan to qualify
as a HDHP (High Deductible Health Plan), the deductible on an individual
policy has to be at least $1,000 and no more than $2,600. For
a family plan, the deductible has to be at least $2,000 but no more
than $5,150. Remember the maximum HSA contribution can equal the
deductible.
The contribution amounts
(deductibles) can rise to $2,650 and $5,250 respectively for 2005.
The total yearly out-of-pocket
expenses of the plan can't exceed $5,000 (individual coverage) or
$10,000 (family coverage).
The insurance companies
issuing the HDHP's can waive the deductibles for preventive care
and charge higher out-of-pocket (copays & coinsurance) for non-network
services.
Like any other healthcare
policy, the insurance coverage begins after the deductible is met.
The higher the deductible on the policy the lower the monthly premiums
usually are.
It's wise to look
for a health plan that provides 100% coverage after the deductible
is met.
